After spending much of 2014 with the highest jobless rate in the state, Grays Harbor County stayed below the top five counties in unemployment rates in January, continuing a trend it started at the end of last year.
While the jobless rate in Grays Harbor increased by .6 percent to 11.2 in January according to the state Employment Security Department, it only jumped up one spot on the list of the highest jobless rates in the state to No. 7. Pacific County’s unemployment rate jumped by 1.3 percent in January to 11.1, coming in just behind Grays Harbor for the eighth-highest rate in the state.
Pacific County’s increase marked the first time it registered a double-digit jobless rate since March of 2014. Grays Harbor’s unemployment rate had been below 10 percent for six months until a 10.6 percent jobless rate in November. The Twin Harbors registered their highest jobless rates in 2014 in the month of February.
Southwest Washington has also relinquished its hold on the unenviable top 10 list of late, with Eastern Washington continuing to dominate the list for the second-straight month. Seven of the 10 highest rates came from Eastern Washington counties.
Ferry County in the northeast corner of the state topped the list at 13.3 percent, followed by Pend Orielle (12.6), Adams and Yakima (12.3), Grant and Stevens (11.7), Grays Harbor, Pacific, Okanogan (11.0) and Lewis (10.5).
