A 23-year-old man was arrested and booked on child rape charges after a missing girl was found in the back seat of his car on Monday morning in Elma, said Grays Harbor Sheriff Chief Criminal Deputy Steve Shumate.
Anthony Eloy Perez is charged with rape of a child in the second degree.
A 12-year-old girl left her home without her parents’ permission early Monday morning and the girl’s mother reported her missing to Elma Police before going to look for her, said Shumate. Upon searching for the girl, the 12-year-old’s mother observed a suspicious 2012 Honda Civic parked just off of the road in the 1500 block of Bailey Road.
The 12-year-old’s mother found her daughter in the back seat of the car with Perez. The 12-year-old was removed from the car by her mother, who also physically apprehended Perez and obtained his car keys.
Shortly thereafter, Elma Police and Grays Harbor Sheriffs Deputies arrived.
The 12-year-old met Perez through one of her friends and it appeared the two had been communicating through an instant messaging application known as KIK, said Shumate.
Investigators found Perez is from Texas and currently enlisted in the military, stationed at Joint Base Lewis McChord. Investigators are working with the military to determine if there are potentially more victims.
Shumate said the investigation is continuing.
