Aberdeen police stop cars not yielding to pedestrians

Aberdeen police conducted a pedestrian crossing emphasis on Sunday from 2:30 -4 p.m. in the 400 block of North Park Street.

During the hour and half emphasis nine violations were observed, with the drivers being contacted, police said. Of the nine violations, six were cited for failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian.

The emphasis involved three officers. One officer who was in plain clothes and acted as the pedestrian. Two other officers were the contact officers who made the stops on the violating drivers.

Additional pedestrian crossing emphasis actions were planned for Monday in the 700 block of East Heron and the 1400 block of Simpson.

The department also said it has received complaints about speeding cars on Bel Aire Drive. The department has received information that numerous cars have been traveling 35 to 40 mph in the 25 mph zone.

The department responded by placing the speed reader board in the area of the 500 block of Bel Aire. The department is now planning a speed enforcement emphasis in the near future where violators may be cited for any observed infractions.

The Aberdeen Police Department asks the motoring public to drive safely and observe all speed limits and other rules of the road. If everyone does there part, we all will be much safer while walking, biking, or driving.
