Hoquiam house fire looks to haved started near chimney

No one was injured in a house fire Tuesday afternoon in the 600 block of Third Street in Hoquiam, said Hoquiam Fire Chief Paul Dean.

Hoquiam firefighters, as well as three from Aberdeen, were dispatched to 611 Third St. just before 1 p.m. on a report of a strucutre fire and arrived to find smoke coming from the second story of the wood frame house, said Dean. No one was at home during the fire and a dog was safely taken out of the residence.

The fire most likely started near the chimney or fireplace insert in the living room, with fire burns extending into the bedroom above it and an adjacent storage room, said Hoquiam Fire Capt. Jerry Gwin. Gwin said there was very little fire damage on the first floor, but said there was smoke damage throughout the residence.

Due to the strucutral damage, the house can’t be occupied at this time. Gwin said the home’s two residents told firefighters they had other places to stay for the time being.

The fire department was called to the same residence earlier on Tuesday for a report of a chimney fire. Gwin said that a resident of the house was home during the fire and was able to put it out before firefighters arrived.
