Former Stevens Elementary employee arrested after allegedly making threats to principal

A former Stevens Elementary School employee was taken into custody Wednesday on on suspicion of felony harassment after allegedly making threatening phone calls to the school’s principal, forcing the school to cancel classes, said Aberdeen Police Capt. John Green.

The woman was arrested at her home in Elma this morning by deputies from the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office, said Green.

Stevens Elementary was put into lockdown after the school received multiple calls from the woman, allegedly threatening Principal Kathleen Werner’s life, said Aberdeen School Superintendent Thomas Opstad.

Aberdeen Police Sgt. Art Laur said the school started to received the threats around 7:30 a.m.

It has not been specified by police or school officials what the threats consisted of, but Green said “it is clear that there was something interpreted as a threat toward the well-being of staff or students.”

Opstad said he didn’t know what might have prompted the threats.

Parents were notified of the closure by phone and text message this morning. School employees were outside the school to let arriving parents know of the cancellation.

Opstad said very few, if any, students were at the school when the calls were received, as classes don’t start until 8:55 a.m.

Opstad said classes will resume tomorrow.
