Marijuana, alcohol may be involved in double fatal on forest road

Two teens were killed when a truck they were riding in crashed into a tree near Spider Lake, northeast of Wynooche Lake. The Mason County Sheriff’s Office suspects marijuana and alcohol may have been involved.

Seven people were riding in the truck, five in the bed, two in the cab, in an area off Forest Service Road 23, about a mile up Spider Lake Road in the Olympic National Forest. The driver struck a large tree head-on, ejecting all five people in the bed.

One victim was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, two were transported to Mason General Hopsital, two were treated and released at the scene and two were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Mason County Coroner’s Office released the names of those killed as David Michael Dudley Jr., 19, of Bremerton, and Alena J. Pepi, 18, of Port Orchard.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide and is in stable condition at Harborview. He suffered a fractured left femur and cuts on his face. Detective William Adam said the man’s identity would be released after charges are filed in Mason County.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office Mason County Fire District 9 and 11 and Mason County Medic One all responded.
