Longtime Hoquiam High School band teacher Roger White will teach solely at Hoquiam Middle School next year and a veteran band teacher has been hired to take his place at the high school.
The Hoquiam School Board voted at a Monday morning meeting to hire Susan Peters to direct the band, and also approved the hiring of two more teachers.
White has been teaching at both the high school and middle school, but asked the district to hire a new high school teacher so that he could focus on the middle school program, said Superintendent Mike Parker.
“He’s put on a fine program at the high school, and he’s always worked 100 percent,” Parker said. “It’s a lot of work and he’s getting tired.”
Parker said he has high hopes for Peters, who has been teaching music for 24 years. Peters will also take over Hoquiam High School’s choir program.
She previously worked for North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo, but resigned in June of last year after budget cuts decimated the school’s band program, according to the North Kitsap Herald.
“I think she’ll be a good fit for the high school,” Parker said. “She’s a veteran music teacher who knows what she’s doing.”
In addition to the new band teacher, the Hoquiam School District will also have two new kindergarten teachers: Heather Atwood and Cashena Tomlin. Neither of the teachers are strangers to the district. Atwood completed her student teaching at Emerson Elementary and Tomlin worked as a substitute teacher this year.
Tomlin completed her student teaching in Utah, Parker said.
