Daily World Citizen of the Year Awards Banquet is June 28

Tickets go on sale this week for The Daily World Citizen of the Year Awards Banquet being hosted by the Aberdeen Elks Lodge.

The banquet is Saturday, June 28, at the lodge and honors Daily World Citizen of the Year Mickey Thurman, Police Officer of the Year Keith Fouts and Firefighter of the Year Keldy Matthews.

Tickets are $25 each, available at the Aberdeen Elks and The Daily World.

A social hour, with a no-host bar, starts at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7. Dinner entree choices include salmon, chicken or vegetarian lasagna. Live music is scheduled after the banquet.

Thurman, the Citizen of the Year, has been one of the driving forces behind the restoration of the 7th St. Theatre and other redevelopment and historic preservation efforts in downtown Hoquiam.

Fouts, the Police Officer of the Year, has been described as a “cop’s cop” for his exceptional dedication to law enforcement.

Over his 24 years with the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office, Fouts, recently retired, did just about everything, from patrol to K-9 handler to Drug Task Force supervisor.

Matthews is just the second-ever chief of the Wishkah Fire District. He has devoted more than 30 years protecting his neighbors’ homes in the Wishkah Valley, continuing the legacy of service started by his mentor, founding chief Bill Knannlein.
