2014 Hoquiam honor graduates


Hoquiam High School has named 17 honor graduates for the Class of 2014. They each earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or better.


Joel Michael Brydon


Joel Brydon is the HHS Class of 2014 Valedictorian with a 4.0. Joel is the son of Dean and Laura Brydon. After graduation he will attend Grays Harbor College for two years then transfer to Washington State University where he will study communications. Joel plans to work as a director at ESPN. During high school, he was a member of the cross country, football, basketball, and baseball teams. He was the president of the HHS chapter of the National Honor Society, was a member of the Leadership Class and served on the ASB. Joel received many awards during high school including the Prudential Spirit Award, Most Inspirational Award in basketball, Most Improved Award in cross country, 2nd Team Baseball, 2nd Team All-League Football. He also served as a captain for the basketball and baseball teams.


Kathleen Jisu Yi


Kathleen Yi is ranked second in the senior class with a 3.94. She is the daughter of Pyong Su and Hani Yi. She will attend the University of Washington where she will pursue a career in the health care field. Kathleen has been involved in FBLA, golf, cross country and band. She received a Lions Club Student of the Month Award, was selected as an FBLA National Participant and made the President’s Honor Roll at Grays Harbor College as a Running Start Student.


Mikaila Ann Johnson


Mikaila Johnson maintained a 3.855. She is the daughter of Mike and Traci Johnson and will attend Central Washington University where she plans to study occupational therapy or nutrition. Mikaila has been a member of the volleyball, basketball and track teams all four years. She has been a member of the Hoquiam Chapter of the National Honor Society, She was selected for Logger’s Playday Court, has been recognized as a Lions Club Student of the Month for September and received All-Academic Recognition and All League Honors in volleyball. Her peers selected her as a Homecoming Princess.


Vanessa Christine Doyle


Vanessa Doyle earned a 3.84. She is the daughter of Rick Doyle and Dana Bridges. Vanessa plans to attend Western Washington University. During high school, she played soccer and basketball for four years, was a member of Honor Society, was a part of the Leadership class and served on the ASB. She was recognized as All Academic all four years for basketball and soccer, was selected as the Lions Club Student of the Month for October. WWU honored her with Admission with Distinction.


Katelynn Nicole Skolrood


Katelynn Skolrood will graduate fifth in her class with a 3.82. Katelyn is the daughter of Russ and Kathryn Skolrood. She plans to attend Saint Martin’s University where she will pursue a degree in accounting. Katelynn plans to pursue a career with the FBI as a forensic accountant. She was involved in FBLA, FCCLA, Phi Theta Kappa, volleyball, cheerleading and golf. Katelynn is a Running Start student and will be graduating with her AA as well as her high school diploma. Katelynn has been recognized as a Lions Club Student of the Month., made the honor roll at Grays Harbor College and received a WIAA Distinguished Scholastic Award.


Brittany Kathryn Nations


Brittany Nations has a 3.812. She is the daughter of Kevin and Paula Nations. Brittany will begin her education at Grays Harbor College before transferring to a four year university where she will study to become an operating room technician or anesthesiologist. She has been a member of the Honor Society where she served as Vice President, has been a member of the basketball, volleyball, golf and cheerleading teams for three years. In addition, she has served as cheer captain, golf captain and yearbook editor. She was the Logger’s Playday Queen, was the senior class president and was selected as the Lions Club Student of the Month. In 2013, she was a state golf participant.


Alex Emisael Valliere


Alex Valliere will graduate with a 3.793. Alex is the son of Debi and Rob Valliere. He will attend the University of Washington where he will study mechanical engineering. After graduation, he plans to work for a company like Boeing. He has been involved in FBLA, was president of Knowledge Bowl, is a three-year varsity wrestler, a member of the cross country team and played varsity soccer for two years. Alex was voted most inspirational for cross country. He also attended FBLA regionals, where he placed first in public speaking and agri-business.


Devin Wesley Kelly


Devin Kelly has earned a 3.731. Devin is the son of Tifanie and Wes Kelly. He will attend Central Washington University where he will study to become a radiologist or State Patrol officer. He was a member of National Honor Society. He was recognized as the CTE Student of the Month twice and was honored as a Lions Club Student of the Month. Devin has been a State Athlete of the Week in football in 2013. He was selected 1st Team All League Running Back in 2013-14, and 2nd Team All League Linebacker in 2012-13. He received a WIAA Academic Award for four years in basketball and football. He is a 3-year letterman in football, basketball and track. He was a state placer in track – placing 1st in the 4x10 meter relay, 3rd in the 200 meter and 4th in the 200 meter.


Yesenia Martinez-Lopez


Yesenia Martinez Lopez is ranked 9th in her class with a 3.725. Yesenia is the daughter of Juan Martinez and Maria Lopez. She will attend Grays Harbor College for two years and then transfer to a technical school to become a veterinary technician. Yesenia has participated in soccer for four years, basketball for two years and tennis for one year. She has served as a sports manager for two years. In addition she has been involved in Spanish Club for three years, has been a member of the leadership class for four years and served as ASB Secretary. She has varsity letters in soccer and Sports Manager. She has been on honor roll throughout high school and was voted Most Comforting for the senior class.


Linda Nicole Poor


Nikki Poor is graduating 10th in her class with a 3.67. She is the daughter of Bridgette Blood and Michael Poor. Nikki will attend Whatcom College for one year and then she will transfer to Western Washington University where she will major in English with an emphasis on literature. She plans to teach English at the high school or college level. Nikki has been a varsity cheerleader for four years, played volleyball and tennis, and has been a volunteer at the Hoquiam Library and Washington Elementary Head Start. She was a Lions Club Student of the Month, has been on the honor roll all four years and takes classes at Grays Harbor College through the Running Start program.


Kiona Lenai Goodman


Kiona Goodman has a 3.624. She is the daughter of Chris Nash and John Leach, and Janis Lemieux and Sam Goodman. She plans to attend Washington State University where she will earn a degree in civil engineering. She has played soccer for three years where she was voted Most Inspirational and tennis for one year. In addition, she has been a cheerleader for two years and was voted Most Inspirational and Most Spirited. She has been involved in ASB and Leadership Class as well. She was selected by her classmates for the Homecoming and Prom Courts.


Brenner Michael Carlstrom


Brenner Carlstrom is ranked 12th in his class with a 3.6. He is the son of Jeri and Bob Nagala. He will attend Central Washington University to complete his pre-requisites for physical therapy then transfer to Eastern Washington University to continue his education. He has been a member of the football and soccer teams for four years, was voted Most Coachable in football his junior and senior years, played basketball for two years and helped coach Youth Sports Camps. He was selected as a Lions Club Student of the Month, the Elks Club Student of the Year and has been on the honor roll all four years.


Kenneth Arnold Huffman Jr.


Kenneth Huffman Jr. has a 3.573. He is the son of Kenneth and Roberta Huffman. He will attend Grays Harbor College where he is considering studying welding. He was a member of football for three years, wrestling for four years and track for four years. He has been on the honor roll.


Roxanne Hope Sparks


Roxanne Sparks is ranked number 14 with a 3.567. She is the daughter of Eugene and Riche Sparks. She will attend DigiPen Institute of Technology where she will study to become a conceptual artist and animator. She has been involved in wrestling, golf and volleyball, earning varsity letters in wrestling and golf. She is a World Class Scholar and attended Grays Harbor College as a Running Start student.


Alexis Marie Franklin


Alexis Franklin has earned a 3.54. She is the daughter of Brian Franklin and Deborah Green. She will attend Washington State University where she will study business management and international business to prepare for her future as a high-level business executive. Alexis has been involved in FBLA, track, cross country, drama, Gazette, and yearbook. She is a member of Younglife, was on the Loggers Playday Court. She received the Coaches Award in track for three years and received the Coaches Award in cross country for two years. She also passed the Advanced Placement U.S. History Exam with the top score possible of 5.


Anna Marie Hagen


Anna Hagen has earned a 3.527. She is the daughter of Trevor and Renee Hagen. She will attend the University of Washington where she will study to become a prosthetist and orthodontist. She has been involved in Sea Scouts, was a Cub Scout day camp counselor and has been involved in the 4H Club, Paws Up.


Cassandra Renee Schroeder


Cassandra Schroeder has earned a 3.501. She is the daughter of Melanie Howell and Ron Schroeder. She will attend Everett Community College where she will study early childhood development and education. She has been involved in Mathletes, ASB, cheerleading, wrestling, track and drama. She has also been on the honor roll throughout high school.
