Spring brings the hope of a new season, of growth and bountiful beauty in nature and mankind.
Spring also brings a bushel of beautiful images on the athletic fields, running tracks, fairways and gridirons from the Twin Harbors’ high school and community athletes.
The images you see here — including the artistic pole vault on the front page — and on page B8 are just a small sample of the sights we’ve seen this past spring in sports. Think of this as a tip-of-the-cap to the athletes and the events that made us cheer, celebrate and cherish to finish the 2013-14 athletic year.
Daily World photographer Aaron Lavinsky provided the art for these pages. For Lavinsky, a native of Arizona, this was his first spring sports season on the Twin Harbors.
“Sports photography can be tough; sports photography in the pouring rain can be even tougher,” Lavinsky siad. “As a sports photographer, I’m trying to freeze action for my photos as fast as 1/3200th of a second. This involves knowing where to be, knowing who to photograph, and making sure the action is in focus so it isn’t all in vain. Add high winds and relentless precipitation to the mix, and you’ve got yourself a challenging day behind the camera.
“While looking through my archives for this photo spread, I found a two-month period in which every sports assignment I photographed took place in mostly rainy, always overcast weather. It wasn’t until a late March baseball game that I could safely leave my camera rain covers in the car without fear of being caught in a downpour. But that’s not a bad thing.
“My thoughts on my first spring sports season on the Harbor? It was a lot of fun. I made photos that were unique to me and learned to embrace the challenge of keeping my equipment dry, and myself — even though I wasn’t always successful.”
