No injuries were reported after an SUV ran into the Thrift City store on B Street in Aberdeen Friday morning, breaking store windows and causing damage to the building’s structure, said Aberdeen Police Traffic Officer George Kelley.
Kelley said officers were dispatched at 10:30 to a “vehicle vs. building accident.” At the scene, a black SUV was covered in broken glass in a parking stall at the front of the store, while a segment of storefront windows were broken out.
Ana Villa-Martinez, the daughter of the driver, said her mother, Estela Martinez-Lopez, was trying to park the car at the store when the vehicle’s breaking system failed.
Shattered glass covered the floor inside the store, while Aberdeen Police and Firefighters attempted to clean up the area. Luis Velasco, the husband of the store’s manager, estimated the damage to the building’s windows and structure will cost around $7,500 to repair. Velasco added that management will attempt to cover the damaged area of the store and intends to stay open, saying it can’t afford to lose business.
“It was like an earthquake, but then you heard all that glass breaking,” said Eileen Kord, who was shopping in the store when the accident happened. Kord was parked near the stall the SUV was attempting to secure when it crashed into the building. She said she went outside immediately after the accident to see if her car was damaged. It wasn’t.
Kord said employees blocked off the damaged area after the incident and patrons continued shopping. The store was still operating after the accident on Friday morning.
Store Manager Patricia Villalobos Diaz said the store lost some items, including bikes, headboards and ironing boards that were propped up against a wall near where the SUV entered the building.
Velasco said the accident comes after a store delivery truck was broken into two weeks ago.
“It’s just one thing after the other,” he said on Friday.
