In Bloom

The ground hog obviously did not see his shadow two weeks ago on Grays Harbor. Spring weather is here and will be evident this weekend, with partly sunny skies and temperatures forecast in the high 50s around the Harbor and mid 50s along the coast.

The other evidence is the fact that the Satsop Bulb Farm opened on Thursday.

Karel Smith, fourth generation flower farmer and co-owner of the Satsop Bulb Farm, confirmed the rumor despite their website saying opening day isn’t until March 1. Smith says the early opening is due to the mild winter.

She estimates they are about two weeks ahead of schedule. She said it is rare that they would be open before Valentine’s Day, and noted that, “everything is a muddy mess.”

“We are picking everything in a tight green bud,” said Smith and noted that they will “ramp up until the first of March.” Currently, they are offering 10 daffodil stems for $1.69. This is music to the ears of all you anthophiles.

And if you were remiss in the obligatory Valentine’s Day flower giving phenomenon, simply plan a trip to the farm located at 930 Monte Elma Road in Elma.

In addition to the fresh cut daffodils, they have primroses and potted daffodils and tulips. You can also purchase a flat of daffodil bulbs ready to plant.

Smith and her sister Kris Edem Smith said the bulb farm will open at 9 a.m. every day.
