Volunteer efforts continue Saturday; flood watch in effect this weekend

Coastal Community Action Program is hosting a flood cleanup today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at CCAP’s offices (117 E Third St. in Aberdeen) and anyone can show up to help.

Lemay Enterprises will have Dumpsters at the SouthShore Mall, the gravel triangle area behind the Pourhouse and at Swanson’s triangle today and Sunday for flood debris, as well.

On Tuesday, The Red Cross will be moving into the CCAP offices to do case work with families affected by the flood. Residents who qualify for assistance will be given a Red Cross debit card to help with the costs of food and clothing.

To make an appointment, call CCAP at (360) 533-5100.

Flood Watch

The weather is expected to turn wet and windy again starting this afternoon, the National Weather Service warned on Friday, with the heaviest rain coming this evening. The forecast prompted the Weather Service to issue a flood watch that includes Grays Harbor County. The rain is explected to taper off to showers on Sunday morning.

Two to three inches of rain are expected over the Olympic Mountains, with one to two inches predicted along the coast and over the interior lowlands. Minor flooding is possible on some rivers, including the lower Chehalis.

“This amount of rain will drive rivers in the watch area sparply higher, with possible minor flooding for a few rivers,” the Weather Service wrote in its flood watch declaration.

Increased wind is also expected tonight and early Sunday morning, with southerly winds of 25 to 35 mph possible, with gusts up to 45 to 50 mph, the Weather Service reported. The strongest winds are expected to occur from about midnight to 7 a.m. on Sunday.

Flood Insurance

As Harborites deal with the aftermath of the flooding and landslides that occurred a week ago, the recovery process may include an insurance claim. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is reminding residents to get in contact with their insurance agents as soon as possible to see what damages are covered.

To file a claim with the National Flood Insurance Program, residents should contact their insurance agent, document their damaged property and file a proof of loss form within 60 days of the flood.

It is not necessary to wait for a Presidential Disaster Declaration to file a flood claim. Policies cannot be canceled for making a claim, either. A flood insurance policy is typically separate from a homeowner’s insurance policy.

For general flood insurance questions, call your insurance company or agent or contact the National Flood Insurance Program at 800-638-6620.
