Three contestants of the Hoquiam Lions Club’s 69th annual Rain Derby hit the 2014 annual precipitation totals right on the nose, guessing to within a tenth of an inch.
Don Smith, Denny Bicar and Jennifer Durney each guessed the actual tally of 59.62 inches.
Smith won the derby with the closest tiebreaker guess for the month of December, 8.25 inches, a little more than a half-inch shy of the actual total, 8.83 inches.
Bicar had guessed 8.09 inches, and Durney, 9.62.
Smith took home the grand prize of $1,000. Bicar and Durney each won $200, along with Mary Jepsen and Steve Mihovilich, who had guessed 59.63 and 59.61 inches respectively.
Tickets are submitted in the fall and drawn on Dec. 31. Winners must guess both the annual rainfall total as well the total for the month of December. The closest guess wins the grand prize. The next closest four guesses win $200 each.
Both the 2014 winners and next year’s participants can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Hoquiam received this week’s record rainfall in early January rather than December.
