The Hoquiam Police Department marked the one-year anniversary of re-opening the Hoquiam City Jail Tuesday.
The department was able to re-open the jail under a contract to hold state probation violators as part of the “swift and certain” program, where low-risk violations result in short stints in local jails.
Chief Jeff Myers said over the past year, the city has developed a close partnership with the state Department of Correctons. The DOC contract has offset 74.8 percent of the operating expenses for the jail.
“I believe this has been a very successful partnership not only because it allows the city to have a full-time jail again, but it also enhances public safety in all of Grays Harbor by holding offenders accountable,” Myers wrote in a press release.
The city is currently working to fill a police services officer position for the jail. Visit http://ift.tt/1dS6bjM for details. Applications are due by April 28.
