High surf expected this weekend

Those heading to the beaches this weekend should exercise some extra caution. The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement warning beachgoers of unusually high surf that may head farther up the beach than usual.

High surf is expected on the central and northern sections of the coast tonight through Sunday morning, when more people may be at the beaches for razor clam digging. The waves may reach 16 to 19 feet.

“Those planning on clam digging Saturday night and Sunday morning, or other beach activities Saturday night and Sunday, should be alert for waves suddenly racing farther up the beach than normal,” the statement said.
