The 2014 boys soccer season for the four Grays Harbor squads will be an interesting mix of confidence and rebuilding for all of them.
Three of the four schools will be looking within to find new scoring threats, while all four of them are shuffling players to replace all-state and all-season senior departed from last year’s squads.
Today, Aberdeen and Hoquiam will meet up in their annual Myrtle Street rivalry match at Sea Breeze Oval. The varsity contest is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Elma will travel to Class 2A Capital to open the season. Montesano is at the Tumwater Jamboree.
The season outlook for the four teams, in capsule form:
Aberdeen
Coach — Larry Fleming (22nd year in Aberdeen School District, 12 years Boys Soccer, 24 seasons girls and boys head coach at AHS)
Primary Formation — 4-4-2.
Returning Lettermen/Veterans — Seth Caba: AHS Hustle Award, Honorable Mention Defender, Tony Jo: Defender, Tavo Sanchez: Defender, Alex Barene: Midfielder, Victor Corona: Midfielder, Andres Valdes: 1st Team All-League GK, Isaiah Contreras: Forward, AHS Most Improved Player.
Varsity newcomers — Victor Junco, John Pellessier, Logan Lopez, Juan Ayala, Victor Sanabria, Todd Caba, Denis Calles-Membreno, Cesar Corona, Mateus Duarte, Robby Lewis, Miguel Torres, Terrance Robin, Victor Medina.
Coach Fleming’s Evergreen 2A Outlook —”Capital will return a lot of players and be strong. Centralia will also be very good. Aberdeen should be able to compete with all teams but I am not sure yet how we will come together. There are a lot of new parts and we are going to have to come up with a new identity after the “Juan” duo graduated last year.”
Other players (not on the squad) to look for — Capital center midfield Nick Boatright will be outstanding and Centralia midfield/forward Binod Sapkota will be really good. Hoquiam
Coach — Fidel Sanchez (11th year as HHS boys head coach).
Primary Formation — 4-4-2.
Returning Lettermen/Veterans — Osiel Rivera, sr. defender, Class 1A all-state selection; Mario Joya, sr. midfielder; Angel Mazariegos, sr. defender; Pedro Weber-Crus, soph. defender; Alex PugaDeLaRosa, soph. forward; Nick Nagala, sr. midfield; Brenner Calstrom, sr. defender; Ivan Salguero, sr. forward; Alex Valliere, sr. defender.
Varsity newcomers — Tahj Malone, soph. GK. (Malone backed up two-time all-league goalkeeper Jamie Bigbie.)
Coach’s Sanchez’s Evergreen 1A Outlook — “Elma is the team to beat, while Tenino can be a surprise, along with Montesano. Our first XI (starting 11) know how to play. We need to find some chemistry and put it together. As long as we can do that, we should be all right.” Montesano
Coach — Mike Malpass (first year at Montesano; former head coach at Shelton HS and former coach in United Kingdom).
Primary Formation — 4-4-2.
Returning Lettermen/Veterans — Nolan Walker, jr. defender (first-team all-league); Brandon Lovell, jr. forward (second-team all-league); David Sawyer, sr. midfielder (second-team all-league).
Coach Malpass’ Evergreen 1AOutlook — “The new players have broken in to the varsity team, but the junior varsity players are currently working hard to catch the eye of the coaching staff and maintain pressure on the varsity players. The support off the pitch makes me feel very optimistic with both groups of players we have. I am anticipating a very competitive league with many ups and downs. I am cautiously optimistic that we will have a winning season. I am looking for a team performance and have been highly impressed with the level of support amongst older/younger, experienced/inexperienced players on the team.” Elma
Coach — Carson Seaberg (fifth year at Elma).
Primary Formation — 4-3-3.
Returning Lettermen/Veterans — Julian Hernandez 1st team sr. midfielder, Edgar Hermenegildo 2nd team sr. forward, Tyler Davis 2nd team sr. GK, Tyler Palmer, sr. defender, Juan Perez, Konon Katzer jr. defender, Lorenzo Ayala jr. defender, Christian Keller jr. midfielder, Steven Persell jr. forward, Donavan Bieker 1st team soph. defender.
Varsity newcomers — Freshman Jake Bates.
