Fundraiser Saturday for Coastal Raptor group

The Aberdeen History Museum and Coastal Raptors group will sponsor a dessert social at the museum at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 22. Special guest will be Jane Veltkamp, Executive Director of the Idaho-based non-profit Birds of Prey Northwest and two specially trained, live raptors: a golden eagle and a Peregrine falcon. She will talk about the ecology and conservation of the raptors and will make a slide presentation on a 10-year effort that she led to reintroduce the Peregrine falcon and osprey to South Dakota.

A registered nurse with a master’s degree in biology from Purdue University, Veltkamp has cared for more than 2,000 injured birds of prey and has given hundreds of raptor education programs. She travels with specially trained raptors held on special U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permits for educational purposes.

Dan Varland, Executive Director of Coastal Raptors, will emcee the event, which will also include short presentation on the work of Coastal Raptors.

Admission is $15 per person and proceeds will help support the Hoquiam-based, non-profit Coastal Raptors.
