City of Aberdeen to publish quarterly newsletter

In an effort to spread good news about the Aberdeen’s projects and accomplishments, a quarterly newsletter will be published by the city government, the mayor and city officials said Monday night at an all city meeting.

The publication, called “Aberdeen at Work,” is being spearheaded by Human Resources Manager Debbie Lund. A black and white version of the letter-sized, double-sided newsletter will be sent out in utility bills and will be distributed to the media. A color .pdf version will be posted on the city’s website.

Mayor Bill Simpson listed the newsletter as a way of improving communication with citizens.

The mayor and some council members seemed stung recently by criticism on Facebook pages, particularly on Our Aberdeen’s page, where missives critical of city governance are often posted. They spent a good deal of the last council meeting on March 12 discussing various allegations about corruption in the city they deem to be unfounded.

Finance Director Kathryn Skolrood said the idea came up at a city staff meeting as a way to get the word out about what the city is doing.

Lund estimated the newsletter will cost around $250 per issue, or $1,000 per year.
