Grizzly golfers outshoot Bobcats

OCEAN SHORES — Hoquiam’s golfers used their depth on Friday to register a rare victory over Aberdeen.

Playing in the final foursome, Dylan Belcher came in with a 49 to help the Grizzlies top the Bobcats, 214-223, in a non-league girls match Friday at Ocean Shores Golf Course.

This was Hoquiam’s first victory over their trans-Myrtle Street rivals in several years and gave Grizzly coach Patty Sundstrom bragging rights over her husband, AHS coach Dan Sundstrom.

Based on past performances this season, the Grizzlies entered this contest as slight favorites. They were off their customary form, however, and the outcome was very much in doubt until Belcher — playing in the fifth position — shot her medal-winning round.

“Dylan Belcher really stepped up,” Patty Sundstrom said. “It was her goal to break 50 and she did it (when it counted).”

Emma Estes and Kelci Parker added 54s for the Grizzlies. Katie Skolrood, a regular member of the starting lineup, missed the match due to work commitments.

Claire Hurd led the Bobcats with a 51, while Vicky Eliason fired a career-best 55.

Aberdeen’s Mari Rabung, working on a solid round, was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. As it developed, Hoquiam would have still won by one stroke had Rabung’s round counted.

“I’m really proud of the way we played today,” Dan Sundstrom said. “We were worried going from Stableford (the Stableford Scoring System is used for Aberdeen’s league matches) to stroke play. Hoquiam has a great team this year and we hung right in with them.”

He cited Eliason for her performance.

The match was contested on a neutral course. Hoquiam, the host school this year, plays the majority of its home matches at Highland Golf Course, but the contest was shifted to Ocean Shores by mutual consent.

Although her team’s scoring suffered by the shift to the more demanding Ocean Shores links, Patty Sundstrom believed it might have provided long-term benefits.

“They had to deal with out of bounds and sand,” she said. “I think it’s a good lesson before they go to district.”

Aberdeen had beaten River Ridge, 52-13, in a previously unreported Evergreen 2A Conference match at the Eagles Pride course at Fort Lewis. Aberdeen’s Morgan Erickson took medalist honors under the Stableford system.

The Grizzlies face Rochester on Tuesday at the Riverside Golf Course in Chehalis. The Bobcats are idle until visiting Centralia on April 12.
