“Aida” comes to life in Aberdeen

Aberdeen High School’s auditorium will soon be filled with student voices singing about love and destiny in their rendition of “Aida.”

The musical is set in ancient Egypt, which is currently moving to take over the neighboring kingdom of Nubia. The princess-turned-slave of Nubia, Aida, played by Keola Holt, finds herself falling in love with the Egyptian Prince Radames, played by Kyle Brewer, who is betrothed to the woman she serves, played by Libby Carrico. Originally an opera with the same name, this version was composed by Elton John and written by Tim Rice.

Tamara Helland, the director, chose this production because of her faith in the student performers, she said.

“Last year, we did ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.’ It was really fun and upbeat but a small production,” Helland said. “This year we wanted something more challenging.”

The cast is composed of 30 students. Helland has her hands in every aspect of “Aida,” but also has help from various community members. Jeannie McNeal has put together many of the costumes. Brad Duffy gives input in the technical pieces, such as lighting cues. Music director Alex Eddy is also pitching in wherever he can on top of coordinating the music for the production. Art Oestreich put together the set with input from Helland.

“As a director, I’m in charge of all of these things, but have been getting immense help from all of these people,” she said. “I’ve worked harder on this production than any other show before.”

Helland also receives help from the students, who help in any area they can. The balancing act of duties is worth it because of the quality of this show, Helland said.

“This show has never been performed anywhere on the Harbor … ” she said. “This play is a fantastic show and people need to come out and see it. The kids are all just fantastic, I know everyone says that, but we really have talented voices here at Aberdeen High School.”

“Aida” is showing for four days, from May 1 to 4 in the Aberdeen High School auditorium.
