Slicked back hair, bright red high heels and a motorcycle sound like the ingredients of a video for the newest rock ‘n’ roll song. Instead, they can be found in the playful video for “Everything I Shouldn’t Be Thinking About” by country duo Thompson Square.
Far from typical cowboy boots and rodeo shirts, married couple Keifer and Shawna Thompson, are known for upbeat songs about love and life. On May 15, they will be performing at the D&R Theatre, which is also the day of their 15th wedding anniversary.
Keifer spoke via cellphone last week on their way to their next show in Louisiana.
Their second full album, called “Just Feels Good,” features several number one played songs “Everything I Shouldn’t Be Thinking About” and “If I Didn’t Have You.” He said both performers feel these are important.
“There are still a lot of people who watch them on GACTV and CMT. That is important to us and they like being able to put faces to the names and voice,” he said. “Plus, it’s fun for us because (recording a music video) is completely different from what we usually do.”
His favorite so far was for “I Got You” off their first, self-titled album where every role, from the makeup audience, to the director and even everyone in the audience is played by the Thompsons.
They met during a vocal contest at the Nashville Nightlife in Tennessee. Their first date was a week later at a softball game.
“And we’ve been together ever since,” he said.
Music has always been a part of both their lives; early in his life, Keifer jammed to Elvis Presley songs on his plastic guitar wearing only a diaper and cowboy boots, while Shawna has been singing at clubs since she was around 8 years old.
Keifer said he loves Bruce Springsteen.
“He also treats his fans well and they just show up in droves because of that. He’s got a good template to follow,” he said. “We want our shows to be like that. With a lot of high energy and some serious moments. Music shouldn’t just be one experience, it should be like a journey.”
Lately, Keifer has also been listening to a lot of The Black Keys, because he finds it important to listen to all kinds of genres for inspiration.
They are slowly planning their next album but for right now, are focused on finishing up this tour, excited for the 2014 CMT awards and soaking up the sun after a soggy winter.

“It’s been cool to see everyone do that, wherever we are,” he said. “We got one the other day from Singapore from someone eating sushi on a beach so it’s been a blast to watch.”
