The body of an 11-year-old girl swept into the ocean near Long Beach was found over the weekend by visitors walking on the beach.
Long Beach Police Department Chief Flint Wright said Lindsey Mustread’s body was found washed ashore at about 9:30 a.m. by civilians on the beach after more than 40 hours in the water. Long Beach officers responded.
She and her 9-year-old brother, Kenneth, had apparently been swept out by a riptide Thursday afternoon.
“That’s generally what happens off our beach, unfortunately,” Wright said. “We have a lot of riptides.”
Kenneth was rescued by the South Pacific County Technical Rescue team, a group of volunteers. The U.S. Coast Guard searched for Lindsey with air and water craft for more than seven hours, covering 59 square miles, but were unable to save the girl.
The family had been visiting the area from Chimacum on the Olympic Peninsula.
