Though neither will be decided in the primary election, candidates in two races in Pacific County got a snapshot of the voters with Tuesday night’s vote count. For the incumbents, the first tally was a mixed bag.
Longtime Pacific County Prosecutor David Burke is trailing his opponent Mark McClain, a former prosecuting attorney for both Kittitas County and Pacific County, after Tuesday night.
McClain has a slim 55-vote lead after garnering 50.6 percent to Burke’s 49.4 percent. McClain, also a former Kittitas County commissioner, resigned from his post at the Pacific County Prosecutor’s Office in February after reportedly having philosophical differences with Burke, according to the Chinook Observer.
Burke and McClain will both advance to the November General Election to continue their hotly contested race for who will be the next prosecutor.
Meanwhile, the primary was kinder to Pacific County Commissioner Lisa Ayers, who is leading fellow Democrat Michael Hess with 57.3 percent (868 votes) of the vote. Ayers has been a commissioner since 2011. Both will advance to the General Election, regardless of them being from the same party, thanks to Washington state’s Top-Two Primary system.
The Pacific County Auditor’s Office reported about 38 percent voter turnout after the initial tally on Tuesday, with an estimated 700 ballots left to count. The next count is planned for Friday.
