Green Diamond plants 100 millionth tree

Green Diamond Resource Co. planted its 100 millionth tree on Monday in a ceremony that commemorated the company’s 125-year anniversary, according to a statement from the company.

Colin Moseley, the Shelton-based forest products company’s chairman, hosted Reps. Denny Heck, D-Olympia, and Derek Kilmer, D-Gig Harbor, to plant the ceremonial tree, along with about 100 other invitees. The Douglas fir was added to a four-year-old forest the company plans to harvest in the year 2050, the statement says.

Moseley also recognized Mt. St. Helen’s Reforestation and Zaldivar Forestry Corporation, two reforestation companies that helped plant 100 million seedlings throught the company’s Western Washington land. Representatives for each company were given engraved shovels to commemorate the occasion.

Rep. Kilmer, during the ceremony, spoke to Green Diamond’s status as a major employer in the area.

“It has been said that he who plants a tree plants hope,” he said. “For 125 years, Green Diamond has been planting hope for families with its living wage jobs.”

Green Diamond Resource Company was started in 1890 by Moseley’s great grandfather, the release says. The company manages forests in Washington, Oregon and California.
