53rd Annual Grayland Driftwood Show this Saturday and Sunday


Beachcombers and driftwood lovers alert! The 53rd edition of the popular Grayland Driftwood show is set for this weekend, April 4 and 5, at the historic Grayland Community Hall.


Admission to attend the show is by donation. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The Grayland Community Hall is located a country block east of SR105 on the corner of Grange and Cranberry roads.


The show will feature all things related to beachcombing and more. Visitors will find displays of all types of driftwood, glass floats, photography and art submitted for judging at the show, entered by non-professional adults and children.


There will be live music on the hall’s stage, along with local art, crafts and food.


This year’s show will also feature the 12th Annual Glass Float Roundup with 100 hand-blown 6-inch diameter art glass floats up for grabs. The unique glass orbs are created by internationally known Grayland artist, Patrick Kolten, at his Verre de Mer studio.


Redemption tokens will be scattered in the Grayland area both Saturday and Sunday. Enter the contest at the hall for a $4 fee. Contest hunt parameters and rules have been changed this year. Entrants will receive details upon registering.


Pick up Glass Float Roundup instructions and maps at the Grayland Community Hall between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday and/or between 8 a.m. and noon on Sunday.


There will be three raffle drawings on Sunday afternoon, starting at 3 p.m. You need not be present to win. They include:


• Five hand blown art glass floats - Tickets at $5 each will be sold at the hall throughout the Driftwood Show.


•Unclaimed Hunt floats - A special raffle for Treasure Hunt participants will be held on Sunday. All unclaimed floats, along with floats number 1, 2 and 3, will be raffled, with your hunting license registration serving as your entry into the raffle. Turn your license in by 2:45 p.m. on Sunday to enter.


Tickets at $5 each will be sold at the hall throughout the Driftwood Show. Items include a free ride in a rally car at the Olympus Rally, gift certificates to local restaurants, a goody-filled Easter basket, tickets to the next Grayland Players musical, two tickets to the Westport Blues Festival, an overnight retreat to Packwood’s newly remodeled lodge, a woodblock table and more.

Dr. Curtis Ebbesmeyer, well known Pacific Northwest oceanographer and lecturer, will bring a “boatload” of flotsam and jetsam found on beaches all over the world, as well as offer information on drift patterns of Japanese tsunami debris coming ashore at local beaches. both Saturday and Sunday.


Alan Rammer


Alan Rammer, a retired Marine Community Outreach and Environmental Education Specialist for the Washington Dept. of Fish &Wildlife, will share fun facts about Washington sea life on Saturday.
