Aberdeen man attempts to steal car, is tased after failing to cooperate with police

A 33-year-old Aberdeen man was booked into the City of Aberdeen Jail on first-degree robbery and two counts of third-degree malicious mischief after he allegedly attempted to steal a resident’s car near the Aberdeen Post Office before being tased by police Monday afternoon.

The man allegedly tried to steal a 62-year-old woman’s car keys in order to take her 2013 Lincoln MKX SUV near the 100 block of West First Street.

Aberdeen Police responded to a report of an unknown problem and learned, while in route, it may involve a car theft. Upon arriving at the scene, Sgt. Keith Dale spoke to the victim, who said the had struggled with her while trying to take her car keys.

During the altercation, the woman said the thief pushed her down onto the street after taking her keys, causing abrasions to her arm and elbow, said Green.

Green said John Yonich, the developer who renovated the D&R Theatre in Aberdeen, walked out of the Aberdeen Post Office, saw the altercation and attempted to confront the thief, then stayed with the victim until police arrived.

When the suspect got into the driver’s seat of the woman’s car, he accidentally pushed a button on the key ring that caused the alarm to sound. Green said numerous people saw the incident and one woman tried to box the suspect in with her vehicle so he couldn’t escape.

The man fled on foot and as officers arrived he jumped onto the hood of a patrol car being driven by an Aberdeen Police Officer. He grabbed onto one of the windshield wipers and attempted to pull it off of the vehicle.

Green states that the refused to comply with police and went toward one officer in an aggressive manner. The officer used his Taser weapon, causing the man to fall to the ground. He was then secured by officers.
