Clean air agency asks flood victims to practice safe, legal demolition and debris removal

The Olympic Region Clean Air Agency warns residents affected by this week’s flood to be careful when tearing down damaged structures in order to eliminate the spread of air pollution.

Before residents rip out interior walls, flooring or ceiling materials, they should first make sure there is no asbestos with that material. Asbestos is an air pollutant made up of microscopic bundles that may cause significant health problems when inhaled into the lungs, including cancer.

As required by federal law, Olympic Region Clean Air Agency’s demolition permits require an asbestos survey of the materials being removed. Applications are available online, along with all the requirements needed for the permit: http://ift.tt/1wCGpne

Residents are also reminded that burning is not an option for disposal of damaged household goods and materials. Trash burning is illegal at all times throughout the state of Washington due to substantial health risks.
