New Daily World publisher has Harbor roots

Sound Publishing has named Stan Woody to be publisher of The Daily World and Sound’s three weekly newspapers on Grays Harbor — The Vidette in Montesano, The South Beach Bulletin in Westport and The North Coast News in Ocean Shores.

Woody was publisher of the Fort Bend Herald in Rosenberg, Texas, until October and has been a publisher or newspaper executive in the Midwest and Southwest, with large companies such as Lee Enterprises and with smaller, family-owned businesses.

Coming to Grays Harbor is something of a homecoming. Woody was born in Aberdeen and his first newspaper job was at the Raymond Herald, in the advertising department.

“I feel blessed to be back on the Harbor. It feels like home,” he said.

His family moved from Aberdeen before he started school, eventually settling in Seattle, and he returned often to see family on Grays Harbor. “I grew up on the beach. I’m a razor clam digger from way back,” he said.

His parents, Katherine Ann DeLosh and Mike Woody worked at The Washingtonian in Hoquiam and The Daily World, respectively, both in the advertising departments.

Woody’s appointment begins immediately. He will be in the office fulltime starting Jan. 5. He takes over from Janet Taylor, who has been interim publisher since Sound Publishing purchased the Grays Harbor newspapers Oct. 1. Taylor will help with the transition and remain on the job through January.

“We’re very pleased to have someone who not only has Stan’s depth of experience, but who knows this community and understands its readers and advertisers like he does,” said Sound Publishing President Gloria Fletcher. As soon as Sound’s purchase of the papers was announced, Woody contacted the company to say he was interested in coming back to the Harbor, Fletcher said.

The area’s geographic position of being at the gateway to the coast and the hub of retailing for the Twin Harbors gives the market strong advantages, he said.

Woody and his wife Barb have six grown children in a blended family.
