One of the men involved in an East County burglary where a homeowner pulled a gun in April will receive prison-based drug treatment as a result of his crime.
Seth R. Stewart, 23, of Montesano, was sentenced in Grays Harbor County Superior Court Monday to a prison-based drug offender sentencing alternative for residential burglary.
Another man, Monte W. Hunley, 30, of Ocean Shores, has pleaded guilty to first-degree burglary and is scheduled for sentencing Friday.
The victim told police he was in the back part of his home in the 100 block of Monte Brady Road outside Montesano April 2 when he heard noises coming from the front. He found Hunley in the house, then tried to keep him there with a .40 caliber pistol.
According to the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office, Hunley “pleaded with the home owner not to shoot him,” then showed him Hunley’s 23-year-old pregnant girlfriend outside in a truck with Stewart.
As the home owner started to dial 911 on his cell phone, Hunley rushed him, according to court documents, wrestling the gun away. The gun went off in the struggle but no one was injured.
The three fled in a pickup truck, leaving it on a logging road before being found April 8 at Hidden Valley Mobile Home Park.
Deputies found a huge jar of coins taken from the home, which Stewart had helped load into the truck, buried behind a trailer in the park.
No felony charges have been filed against the girlfriend.
Hunley was initially charged with second-degree robbery along with burglary, but the robbery charge was dismissed as part of a plea agreement signed May 23. He faces a standard sentencing range of seven years, three months to nine years, eight months. The recommended sentence is eight years, six months.
If Stewart fails to complete his drug treatment program in prison, or if he violates the conditions of his sentence after release, he will receive a new sentence somewhere within his standard range of two years, nine months to three years, seven months.
