Teen seriously injured in skateboard fall, airlifted to Harborview

A 14-year-old Aberdeen boy was seriously injured Monday afternoon when he fell off his skateboard riding down Basich Boulevard, the Aberdeen Police Department reported. He was not wearing a helmet.

The teen was breathing but unresponsive when his friends got to him, according to Aberdeen police. The Aberdeen Fire Department transported the boy to Grays Harbor Community Hospital, where he was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

“It wasn’t a good prognosis at the time,” Capt. John Green said. “A miracle is what we’re hoping for.”

Police responded at about 2 p.m. to the 1400 block of Basich Boulevard, where the Aberdeen Fire Department was treating the teen. Friends told officers the four boys had ridden their longboards down the hill “more times than they could remember,” a press release said.

Friends reported the victim and another friend rode down the hill first while the other two followed in a car. The victim’s board began to wobble. “He fell and hit a curb,” Green said.
