Fire destroys garage, vintage vehicles in Ocean Shores

OCEAN SHORES — A fire that started in a garage in the 800 block of Falls of Clyde Loop SE caused an estimated $300,000 damage Saturday morning, destroying two vintage vehicles, an RV and a boat, the Ocean Shores Fire Department reported.

Firefighters responded at about 10:30 a.m. to find a garage fire that was rapidly consuming the property, according to a news release.

A male resident, home at the time of the fire, sustained burns to his arms and was transported to the hospital. The fire was contained and units returned to service at approximately 3 p.m. Battling the blaze were approximately 15 firefighters, four engines and three ambulances.

“Hampering the initial response was that the Department had responded to multiple alarms (Saturday) morning, some of which required ambulance transport to the hospital in Aberdeen, leaving one career member on duty in the city at the time of the fire dispatch,” said the news release from Fire Chief Tom Lique.

If it wasn’t for the response of volunteer and off-duty career staff, the outcome in this situation would have been much different, Lique said.

“With minimum career staffing of three personnel this situation is all too real of a threat for the community and the scenario has occurred twice now since my arrival in June,” Lique said.

A fire on Sand Dune Avenue earlier this summer also occurred when crews were handling multiple alarms and transporting patients when a working structure fire occurred.

Saturday’s fire consumed the detached garage and part of the main residence before being extinguished.

“The Crews of the Ocean Shores made some great tactical decisions early in the fire that allowed for the majority of the main residence to be saved,”Lique said. “I really appreciate the support we received from responders from neighboring Fire District 7, members from the Hoquiam Fire Department and the support from the local IGA grocery, which made a huge difference in the outcome of the fire.”
